Organization Background

Community Empowerment Initiative or COMEI is an indigenous, non-political, non-governmental organization that was founded in 2007 as a Community based organization and incorporated as a company limited by guarantee without shares.

The organization was later in 2009 registered with the National NGO Board. The organization was founded in one area in Kabale district in southwestern Uganda by a group of community members who felt the need to respond to the negative impact of /AIDS having lost a number of their family members to the disease. The organization has since been focusing on community empowerment and advocacy with HIV/AIDS and other health related issues.

Our Goal: The main goal of COMEI is to promote positive social change, better health and development untargeted communities with a special focus on poor and vulnerable people both female and
male including women and young people.

COMEI Intervention areas 

These are based on the needs of the community and they include:

  • Human rights promotion by empowering the community to demand and engage  duty bearers for accountability and action for better services as well as prevention of gender based violence
  • Health promotion especially HIV/TB prevention, cervical cancer screening in the community working in collaboration with  local governments manly the department of health services
  • Advocacy for improved service delivery and accountability in the health sector and the  roads sector is selected areas
  • Advocacy for education for poor, vulnerable children living with HIV and linking them to educational opportunities and partnerships with OVC agencies like the Peace Centre Uganda.
  • The environment with a special focus on environment protection, soil management, waste management, tree planting
